That game too had been due to be shown live in stadiums and parks but authorities cancelled all planned open-air screenings just hours before kick-off forcing fans to watch in cinemas. The U-turn by Tehran provincial council came after the 1-0 win over Morocco saw tens of thousands take to the streets of the capital in rare and wild celebration, many of them women.More than 10,000 tickets were expected to be put on sale for Wednesday’s screening and at less than two euros each they were swiftly snapped up.Female member of parliament, Tayebeh Siavoshi, who has long campaigned for women to be allowed to watch matches live in stadiums, said she hoped the decision would pave the way for a wider change of policy. Many Iranian clerics oppose women attending football matches, saying they must be protected from the masculine atmosphere, though the ruling is frequently criticised from across the political spectrum © AFP/File / JONATHAN NACKSTRAND“Once spectators have shown their respect for the rules, we hope it will be possible to screen the Iran-Portugal game in the same stadium (next Monday) and that will mark the start of families attending matches played at the Azadi,” she told the ISNA news agency. Many Iranian clerics oppose women attending football matches, saying they must be protected from the masculine atmosphere, though the ruling is frequently criticised from across the political spectrum. The opening game 3-3 draw between Group B favourites Spain and Portugal has given Iran a sniff of hope that it could seal a shock berth in the last 16.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

‘Aaron’s Law’ Promises To Reduce Hacker Penalties

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… adam popescu Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts Tags:#Aaron Swartz#hackers#law#privacy#security center_img As the Internet activist, inventor and alleged criminal Aaron Swartz was memorialized in a Chicago-land synagogue yesterday, on the other side of the country a new bill was proposed aimed at reducing the penalties for Internet hackers. Facing a fine of up to $1 million and as many as 35 years in prison for computer fraud, Swartz, a co-founder of Reddit, took his own life last Friday. His family blames their son’s suicide on the stress incurred by the Federal government’s constant hounding. The new bill could help prevent tragedies like this from happening again.“Aaron’s Law” is an attempt to reform a law some call draconian. Drafted by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and released on Reddit, the bill attempts to limit the government’s sweeping authority when it comes to wire fraud statutes and the outdated, 27-year-old Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).Swartz was facing an April court date for 13 counts of hacking and wire fraud stemming from breaking into MIT’s network and downloading files. Speak UpIn a blog post written Monday in the wake of Swartz’ passing, Marcia Hoffman, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), contended that hacking laws are far too broad and vague. And because of that, the Feds had the legal justification to go after Swartz so hard. She says the young man who invented the RSS feed wasn’tthe super-hacker the government made him out to be. The other major problem with the law, as presently stated, is extremely harsh penalties: “The government should never have thrown the book at Aaron for accessing MIT’s network and downloading scholarly research,” Hoffman wrote Monday. “Even first-time offenses for accessing a protected computer ‘without authorization’ can be punishable by up to 5 years in prison… plus fines.” Aaron’s LawThe new law would serve to amend the CFAA “to exclude certain violations of agreements or contractual obligations, relating to Internet service, from the purview of certain criminal prohibitions.” Those include computer fraud to the effect that accessing a computer network without explicit permission is not the “sole basis for determining that access to a protected computer is unauthorized.’’What it all means is that if such a bill were enacted into law, a person in Aaron’s position might not suffer the same fate as he did. The simple act of unauthorized access would not give prosecutors enough legal ground for the government to go full-tilt and make a case. On Tuesday on Reddit, Rep. Lofgren pledged her support to make the bill a reality, and expressed her desire to prevent future tragedies like Aaron Swartz’s from occurring. “His family’s statement about this speaks volumes about the inappropriate efforts undertaken by the U.S. government,” Lofgren wrote yesterday on Reddit. “There’s no way to reverse the tragedy of Aaron’s death, but we can work to prevent a repeat of the abuses of power he experienced.”Photo courtesy of Peretzp. Raptors and 76ers made changes this season, and now face off

first_imgUAAP volleyball: Adamson snaps 9-game skid, spoils UP’s final game And about a day later, the Raptors went out and got Marc Gasol. The roster-remodeling that the 76ers and Raptors were involved in at the trade deadline was done with postseason goals in mind — so it seems fitting that the teams are about to square off for a berth in the Eastern Conference finals. The second round of the NBA playoffs starts on Saturday when Philadelphia goes to Toronto for Game 1.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logistics“Both have had a lot of changes throughout the year,” Toronto forward Pascal Siakam said. “It will definitely feel different. It kind of feels like the first time we’re meeting them.”Toronto has won 21 of the last 24 meetings between the teams and went 3-1 against the 76ers this season, numbers that both sides agree are largely irrelevant. “We’ve never played them with the team we have,” 76ers coach Brett Brown said. “The context needs to be somewhat considered.”That goes back to what happened almost immediately following the last Raptors-76ers matchup.Toronto’s 119-107, wasn’t-as-close-as-that-looks victory hadn’t been in the books for an hour before news broke that the 76ers were sending three players and four draft picks to the Los Angeles Clippers for Harris, Boban Marjanovic and Mike Scott. It’s already paid off for Philly in many ways; Marjanovic has been a solid backup for Joel Embiid and Scott made perhaps the biggest shot of the 76ers’ first-round win over Brooklyn.Scott is now ailing and seems likely to miss Game 1, if not more, with a heel injury. The speed the Raptors play with may affect how Philly plans to use Marjanovic in this series. But Harris fits in perfectly with the 76ers’ needs on both ends — just as Gasol, who will be primarily tasked with slowing Embiid, has done since joining the Raptors.“Everybody loaded up,” Brown said. “They really loaded up. It was an arms race for the Eastern Conference championship.”ADVERTISEMENT Embiid averaged 26.3 points against the Raptors and Ben Simmons shot 63 percent in the four games, but was also forced into 6.3 turnovers per game in the season series. For Toronto, Kyle Lowry averaged 16.8 points, while Siakam averaged 16.3 on 52% shooting. And Kawhi Leonard averaged 30.3 points in three meetings against Philadelphia — with the game he sat out in the series being the only one where the 76ers prevailed. It wasn’t just the trade deadline where teams were thinking about these 2019 playoffs. The Raptors swung the deal for Leonard last summer precisely for these moments, and the 76ers offered him the highest praise.“He’s pretty damn good,” 76ers guard J.J. Redick said. Here are some other things to know going into the series:HISTORYSaturday’s loser likely won’t be that worried. Both teams lost Game 1 of Round 1, Toronto falling to Orlando and Philadelphia losing to Brooklyn. Toronto is 2-14 all-time in Game 1s. This is the second series between the Raptors and 76ers; Philly beat Toronto in six games in the 2001 East semifinals, the year that Allen Iverson took the 76ers to the NBA Finals.PERFECT KAWHILeonard has played against the 76ers 13 times. His Toronto and San Antonio teams are 13-0 in those games. Philadelphia was in its tanking process for the majority of those meetings, but it also should be noted that Leonard was one of four players to face the 76ers at least three times and average more than 30 points against them this season.DOUALA VS. YAOUNDEFor the first time, a pair of players born in Cameroon — Embiid and Siakam — will face off in a playoff series. Embiid is from Yaounde, Siakam from Douala, and those are Cameroon’s two biggest cities. “People on Twitter were like, ‘Oh, it’s Douala against Yaounde … and at the end of the day, Cameroon wins,’” Siakam said. “And I’m like, ‘Nah, at the end of the day, Douala wins.’” Private companies step in to help SEA Games hosting MOST READ Duterte wants probe of SEA Games mess LATEST STORIES PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games PLAY LIST 02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City01:07Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes02:49World-class track facilities installed at NCC for SEA Games02:11Trump awards medals to Jon Voight, Alison Krauss SEA Games hosting troubles anger Duterte EMBIID VS. Pradhan dials Saudi Oil Minister Kingdom assures supply commitments will be met

first_imgNew Delhi: Saudi Oil Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman on Thursday assured his Indian counterpart Dharmendra Pradhan of meeting all oil supply commitments to India as the Kingdom looks to restore production from its facilities to pre-strike levels very soon. Pradhan spoke to his Saudi counterpart on phone and discussed in details supply plan in the aftermath of a massive attack on the Kingdom’s crude oil facilities that wiped out as much as 5 million barrels per day of output. Also Read – Commercial vehicle sales to remain subdued in current fiscal: Icra”They have again assured that all supply commitments to India will be met,” said Sanjiv Singh, chairman of Indian Oil Corp (IOC). Saudi Arabia, which is India’s second-largest oil supplier, sells close to 2 million tonnes of crude every month. Of this, 1.2-1.3 million tonnes of supplies for September have already been taken and the rest too has been assured. However, Saudi has sought deferment of some LPG supplies but they have assured to make up for all the quantities, he said, adding any shortfall can be bought from Qatar. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 daysIndia buys some 200,000 tonnes of LPG every month from Saudi Arabia. Industry sources said Saudi Arabia has cut throughput at its refineries to meet its crude oil supply commitments. Pradhan had earlier this week stated that India, the world’s third-largest oil consumer, is keeping a close watch on the developing situation. Indian oil companies, as well as the government, are in touch with Saudi oil company Aramco and authorities in the Kingdom, he had said. “India is watching the situation closely.” India imports 83 per cent of its oil needs, with Saudi Arabia supplying a fifth of the purchases. Saudi Arabia is its second-biggest supplier after Iraq. It sold 40.33 million tonnes of crude oil to India in 2018-19 fiscal, when the country had imported 207.3 million tonnes of oil. A massive drone strike on the world’s largest crude-processing facility operated by Saudi Aramco on Saturday drove oil prices to their highest level in nearly four months. The attack had knocked out over half of Saudi Arabia’s production as it cut 5.7 million barrels per day or over 5 per cent of the world’s supply.last_img read more

The SIT has also arrested three other people in the case of extortion filed by Chinmayanand. The woman who accused Chinamayanand of rape is also an accused in the extortion case and was in constant touch with Sanjay Singh, said police. Sanjay Singh, Sachin Singh and Vikram, who were arrested today, are accused of sending a message to Chinmayanand demanding Rs five crore and threatening him with the release of objectionable videos, Arora said. “The woman was in constant touch with accused Sanjay Singh. She did not name Chinmayanand in the video. The Supreme Court took cognizance of the matter and directed the state government to form SIT to probe the matter. Immediately after the woman went missing, Chinmayanand’s lawyer Om Singh registered a case of extortion and threat on his behalf.
