Cartoon: Freeze! Zoom! Enhance! Turn Lead Into Gold!

first_imgrob cottingham It’s getting to be a joke: the magic things cops can do with computers. “Wait – there’s a reflection in the teakettle! Magnify! Enhance! Now pull a DNA sample from the image! I don’t care, just do it – boost the power if you have to! Crossmatch it with every person named Brent in the continental United States! Damn, this new version of GIMP rocks!”Annnnd… DING! Three seconds later, up pops the photo of the perpetrator, out go the cops to haul him in and America sleeps a little more soundly tonight. We’ve grown to accept this, partly because without these little storytelling cheats our streets would be crawling with fictitious master criminals executing horrific, if imaginary, atrocities. And partly because we have a tacit understanding with directors that they’re going to keep us entertained, and there’s nothing pulse-pounding about “Well-elp, might as well take the rest of the week off while this thing renders.”But maybe what really sells us on the idea of magic high tech down at the precinct is that, deep down, we kind of wish it were true (never mind the bladder-emptying implications for civil liberties and privacy). If we were being stalked by a sociopathic ex-con determined to exact a terrible revenge for our having sentenced him to 30 years in prison, well, dammit, we’d want those nice CSI people to have every tool they needed to stop him in the nick of time. And maybe, just maybe, that technology could trickle down to, say, the prosumer market. “Computer… draw cartoon!” 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… More Noise to Signal. 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#Cartoons#web Related Posts 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…last_img read more

CWG denigrated India’s image: Aiyar

first_imgContinuing his tirade against the just-concluded Commonwealth Games, former Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar on Sunday said India should have focused on improving the plight of its poor instead of spending thousands of crores on the event which only “denigrated” its image.”Tell me if your stadium is empty why not invite the children of those labourers who built the stadium to come in and sit down,” Aiyar, the most vocal critic of the Delhi Commonwealth Games, told PTI in New York. “But no, this was a middle class party.””So only PLUs (people like us) were given the opportunity of coming in and they didn’t come in adequate numbers,” the Congress MP said, noting that 960 crores spent on renovating the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium could have been put to better use.Aiyar also claimed that no single event had done more damage to India’s image in the past 63 years since independence than the recent Commonwealth Games.”I don’t think the world has ever denigrated us and in such obscene language as we have seen happening in the past few weeks,” he said.”70,000 crores to get ourselves a bad name,” the former minister said, referring to the total amount spent on the 12-day mega sporting event. On whether the Games were a success as declared by the Indian government, Aiyar claimed that the event had failed to position India as a top player on the global stage.”I’m not sure we’ve attained the objective we had of projecting ourselves as a great rising economic power to the Western world or even to Africa,” he said.advertisementGiven India’s poverty and inability to provide basic health care to millions of women and children, Aiyar said that the question is not whether the Games were successful but whether so much money should have been invested in the event. In view of talks that India is ready to host the Olympics as well, the former minister urged that CWG should be seen as a deterrent for India hosting mega sporting events, and noted that sports in India would be better served if the money was spent on the athletes and not stadia.”I see no reason at all why we should create this perversion of national priorities,” Aiyar said. “We must get back to the fundamental goal of poverty alleviation.””95 per cent of our youth have no access to organised sports and games,” he said, calling for “making India a sporting nation rather than a nation that hosts sports events.”On being pointed out that China and South Africa had pulled off the Olympic Games and the football World Cup respectively while dealing with developmental issues, Aiyar stressed that China was already a “fantastic sporting nation” and South Africa had plenty of financial help from outside.”Huge number of Chinese children and Chinese youth are given full facilities to develop their sporting talent,” he said. “They are a sporting nation that then hosted a sporting event … we are not … we have to become a sporting nation first.”On whether the criticism of the CWG was fair, Aiyar said, “Why are you making the Games a test of patriotism.””Is it patriotic to have done the games in such a way that the first action of the Prime Minister after the games are over is to appoint a probe team to look into malfeasance, inefficiency and possible corruption,” he said.last_img read more

Raptors and 76ers made changes this season, and now face off

first_imgUAAP volleyball: Adamson snaps 9-game skid, spoils UP’s final game And about a day later, the Raptors went out and got Marc Gasol. The roster-remodeling that the 76ers and Raptors were involved in at the trade deadline was done with postseason goals in mind — so it seems fitting that the teams are about to square off for a berth in the Eastern Conference finals. The second round of the NBA playoffs starts on Saturday when Philadelphia goes to Toronto for Game 1.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logistics“Both have had a lot of changes throughout the year,” Toronto forward Pascal Siakam said. “It will definitely feel different. It kind of feels like the first time we’re meeting them.”Toronto has won 21 of the last 24 meetings between the teams and went 3-1 against the 76ers this season, numbers that both sides agree are largely irrelevant. “We’ve never played them with the team we have,” 76ers coach Brett Brown said. “The context needs to be somewhat considered.”That goes back to what happened almost immediately following the last Raptors-76ers matchup.Toronto’s 119-107, wasn’t-as-close-as-that-looks victory hadn’t been in the books for an hour before news broke that the 76ers were sending three players and four draft picks to the Los Angeles Clippers for Harris, Boban Marjanovic and Mike Scott. It’s already paid off for Philly in many ways; Marjanovic has been a solid backup for Joel Embiid and Scott made perhaps the biggest shot of the 76ers’ first-round win over Brooklyn.Scott is now ailing and seems likely to miss Game 1, if not more, with a heel injury. The speed the Raptors play with may affect how Philly plans to use Marjanovic in this series. But Harris fits in perfectly with the 76ers’ needs on both ends — just as Gasol, who will be primarily tasked with slowing Embiid, has done since joining the Raptors.“Everybody loaded up,” Brown said. “They really loaded up. It was an arms race for the Eastern Conference championship.”ADVERTISEMENT Embiid averaged 26.3 points against the Raptors and Ben Simmons shot 63 percent in the four games, but was also forced into 6.3 turnovers per game in the season series. For Toronto, Kyle Lowry averaged 16.8 points, while Siakam averaged 16.3 on 52% shooting. And Kawhi Leonard averaged 30.3 points in three meetings against Philadelphia — with the game he sat out in the series being the only one where the 76ers prevailed. It wasn’t just the trade deadline where teams were thinking about these 2019 playoffs. The Raptors swung the deal for Leonard last summer precisely for these moments, and the 76ers offered him the highest praise.“He’s pretty damn good,” 76ers guard J.J. Redick said. Here are some other things to know going into the series:HISTORYSaturday’s loser likely won’t be that worried. Both teams lost Game 1 of Round 1, Toronto falling to Orlando and Philadelphia losing to Brooklyn. Toronto is 2-14 all-time in Game 1s. This is the second series between the Raptors and 76ers; Philly beat Toronto in six games in the 2001 East semifinals, the year that Allen Iverson took the 76ers to the NBA Finals.PERFECT KAWHILeonard has played against the 76ers 13 times. His Toronto and San Antonio teams are 13-0 in those games. Philadelphia was in its tanking process for the majority of those meetings, but it also should be noted that Leonard was one of four players to face the 76ers at least three times and average more than 30 points against them this season.DOUALA VS. YAOUNDEFor the first time, a pair of players born in Cameroon — Embiid and Siakam — will face off in a playoff series. Embiid is from Yaounde, Siakam from Douala, and those are Cameroon’s two biggest cities. “People on Twitter were like, ‘Oh, it’s Douala against Yaounde … and at the end of the day, Cameroon wins,’” Siakam said. “And I’m like, ‘Nah, at the end of the day, Douala wins.’” Private companies step in to help SEA Games hosting MOST READ Duterte wants probe of SEA Games mess LATEST STORIES PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games PLAY LIST 02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City01:07Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes02:49World-class track facilities installed at NCC for SEA Games02:11Trump awards medals to Jon Voight, Alison Krauss SEA Games hosting troubles anger Duterte EMBIID VS.
