LA CA?ADA – Another season, another trip to the CIF-Southern Section semifinals for the La Ca ada High School boys basketball team. Senior center Adam Malik finished with 25 points to lead the Spartans to a 55-42 victory over visiting Santa Clara on Friday in the Division III-AA quarterfinals. La Ca ada on Tuesday will face Price, which has moved up to Division III-AA after winning a record eight consecutive CIF titles in Division V-A and five state championships since 2000. “We’ve got to play a very good Price team,” Hofman said, “and I think we have a good shot if we play this well and give it our best effort.” La Ca ada took control of the game early in the second quarter after eight consecutive points by Malik gave the Spartans a 17-5 lead. With the ever-present threat of Malik and senior Christian Nitu controlling the boards, the Spartans stretched their lead to as many as 17 points in the third quarter and headed into the fourth with a 32-21 lead. Nitu finished with five points and had a game-high 15 rebounds. The Saints cut the lead to 42-35 with 2:35 leftbut could get no closer. He’s our guy we go to to make the big shots and he did that tonight for us.” The Spartans (27-2) will be making their third consecutive CIF semifinal appearance, but it won’t be easy.
